GREY SQUIRRELS

Many people wouldn’t think of grey squirrels as a pest species, especially when seeing them scurrying up and down trees foraging for nuts. However the grey squirrel can become more of an annoyance when they empty your bird feeders. Even worse, once breeding season has begun, they have a tendency of invading our lofts to make a nest (or drey) out of the insolation and have a litter of pups which can cause all manner of issues. This can occur twice a year when conditions are favourable.

Signs of squirrels in your loft at night

If you have squirrels in your attic space, you will typically hear noises in the morning and again in early evening as the sun begins to set; squirrels will spend most of the day foraging for food and only return for shelter. However, a few weeks after a litter has been birthed, squirrel pups will produce more noise throughout the whole day as they start to test their legs. It is quite common for a squirrel problem to go unnoticed in the early stages until the young start making their presence known. Aside from the physical damage to the eaves in most cases to allow easier entry, squirrels have the same tendency as other rodents to chew through anything plastic. This means they might go after your electrical wiring and pipework, which can result in devastating damage.

How to get rid of squirrels

As grey squirrels are classified as a pest species, they cannot be released back into the wild under Section 14 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act (1981), doing so can result in prosecution. As a customer, if you use a live trap to catch a squirrel, it is then your responsibility to dispatch it humanely following the strict guidelines under the general license for wildlife management.

Contact your local pest control once you are aware of the problem, as squirrels will typically keep coming back to the same property once they have a nesting site; this can create a lot of damage over time. Even if proofing is done after the young have left, squirrels often just chew their way back in.
