RODENTS

Hearing things going bump in the night is common, especially in tenement flats when neighbours might not be as light footed as you wish.  Sometimes, though those bumps might be scratches and there is a high likelihood that you have uninvited guests living in your loft, wall cavities or foundations.
Mice and rats live near us at all times, however we always see an increase in call-outs during colder months when rodents enter our homes looking for shelter and warmth. They are exceptionally good at moving around by climbing walls, burrowing under foundations or entering through drainage systems. A mouse can enter a gaps as small as 5mm, which means most properties will have an access point for them.

How to get rid of mice and rats

If you’re hearing noises through the night, you should consider calling a local pest controller to assess the situation, check for entry points and eliminate the problem. Mice and rats can cause a lot more issues than just noises in the night. Rodents need to file their teeth to keep them sharp; in doing this they can damage your woodwork but more worryingly, they chew electrical wiring and even pipework which can cause house fires and water damage. Aside from the physical damage they cause, rodents carry a variety of harmful pathogens that can be passed to humans, so it is always wise to get rid of the problem.

If conditions are favourable, rodents can reproduce every 19-23 days and the litter (of 5-11 offspring) will wean in the same time scale and be sexually mature themselves in 5-16 weeks. This can result in a huge population explosion in a short space of time which is why mice are considered one of the most prevalent species of mammal!
