Clothes Moths treatment in Edinburgh and the Lothians

Clothes Moths

What damage can clothes moths do?

In the late 1940’s this pest was once known as the most economically detrimental clothing and household pest in the country. Clothes moths, or more accurately, their larvae, caused millions of pounds worth of damage. Over the years there has been a decline due to the increased use of synthetic fabrics, however clothes moths are still present in our day to day lives. Finding holes in your cashmere sweaters or lambswool jumpers and bald spots under the furniture or in carpets are signs that you may have a clothes moth infestation.

How do I know if I have clothes moths?

Eggs are typically laid in dark recesses close to a food source. Usually this is under the sofa, bed or other items of furniture that don’t get moved very often. If you see a sudden flurry of activity of flying adults or wriggling larvae or even some bald areas in the fabric, then it is time to take action before further damage is caused or the infestation spreads.

How to get rid of clothes moths

For a treatment to be effective, it needs to be thorough. Similar to the prep work required for bedbug treatment, all clothing and materials must be washed at 60 degrees to kill off all stages of the life cycle. Freezing the items will also have the same effect for any materials that cannot be washed at this temperature. The use of a residual insecticide is also recommended, ideally throughout the whole house to ensure complete eradication.

Lightning Pest Specialists use an industrial-strength insecticide combined with an Insect Growth Inhibitor to halt the development of the clothes moth. Once a spray treatment has been conducted, several pheromone-specific sticky traps will be placed in problem areas to monitor the level of infestation and to eliminate any remaining moths.
