Flea treatment in Edinburgh and the Lothians

Fleas

Why do I have fleas?

Our furry companions are the loves of our lives, but sometimes they can cause a few headaches, such as bringing fleas into our homes. Without regular treatments to keep these at bay, or by simply forgetting a dose of medication to keep your pet protected, fleas can start to live in animals’ fur and in turn spread to the rest of the house.

Occasionally we will be asked to treat a house for fleas when no animal is present which always starts with a thorough investigation to get to the root cause. Sometimes it a piece of second-hand furniture can be to blame, or perhaps you (even briefly) had a friend’s pet visit and you’ve been left with itching bites on your wrists and ankles.

What am I getting bitten by?

Aside from the typical bites on the wrists and ankles, fleas themselves can be extremely difficult to see due to their small size. A quick and easy method to find them is to put saucers of hot, soapy water near the skirting of the rooms in which you seem to be being bitten. The heat of the water will attract the fleas, and once they get into the soapy water, they cannot get back out again resulting in several them floating in the saucer for you to see. It is always best to keep a sample if possible as a pest controller won’t be able to treat the property without finding evidence of the root cause.

How to get rid of fleas

Fleas tend to be easier to treat than other insects, especially if there is an animal living at the property. The first thing to do is make sure your pet is up-to-date with any flea treatment; it may be worth speaking to a vet for advice on the correct medication as over-the-counter remedies may not be strong enough. Using a residual spray on all the floors and skirting is the best way to get rid of any fleas not being carried on a pet. At Lightning Pest Specialists we use a strong insecticide not available for purchase to the public which contains an Insect Growth Inhibitor to pause the flea in its current developmental state. This is designed to remove the infestation far quicker and without need for further treatments.
